St. Patrick’s Day is one of the biggest celebrations in Savannah. In fact, the celebrations are not just for one day but for a whole month! Savannah is host to many events and traditions that have people come from all over the country to celebrate in the hostess city of the South.

Here are 10 traditions and events happening this year:

1. Savannah Irish Festival

Savannah is home to a big Irish community who kicks of the festivities in February by hosting an Irish Festival. The festival includes Irish musicians, dancers, and food. This two-day family friendly event has different stages and special areas for children so that people of all ages can enjoy learning about Irish heritage.

2. Greening of the Forsyth Park Fountain

To officially kick off the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshal dyes the fountain water green. The same is done to fountains all over Savannah because St. Patrick’s Day isn’t complete without Savannah’s green fountains.

3. March of Dimes Shamrock Run

Another family friendly event is the 25th annual March of Dimes Shamrock 5k Run.

With a kids run before and live music after wards, this is the perfect way to celebrate the holiday while supporting a great cause and getting the whole family involved.

Costumes are encouraged and all proceeds go to the improvement of the health of babies.

4. Irish Heritage Dance

After the run, there will be an Irish Heritage Dance at the Alee Shriner’s Temple. Hosted by the Irish Heritage Society,  this dance is open to all ages and will revolve around celebrating Irish heritage.

5. Chloë Agnew and A St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

Head down to Tybee Island for a concert of Irish folk and pop songs by a former Celtic Woman. Bring the whole family for a night of a night of entertainment.

6. Celtic Cross Ceremony and Celebration

Over at Emmet Park stands a Celtic Cross statue and every year, Irish Catholics celebrate their heritage by having speakers from the Irish community accompanied by music talk about the what really makes St. Patrick’s Day important.

7. Jasper Green Ceremony

The Sergeant William Jasper Ceremony honors current and past military members. Sergeant Jasper was war hero whose parents came here from Ireland and his monument resides in Madison Square.

8. St. Patrick’s Day Fire Ball

The Savannah Professional Firefighters Association welcomes you to an evening of live music, drinks, dancing and prizes. The Fire Ball is a chance to dress up and have a more glamorous celebration.

All proceeds will go to The Fallen Figherfighter’s Fund.

9. St. Patrick’s Day Festival

The festival is full weekend event. Not only is River St. set up with live music and food vendors but bars and restaurants all around downtown join the celebrations as well. From green beer to free green gear, it’s a festival like no other.

10. St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Last but not at all least, Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the second biggest parade in the country and one of the biggest in the world. The parade has been around for almost 200 years and includes floats, dancers, bands, Irish groups and societies from all over the country.
