With the weather warming up, our four-legged friends want to go outside just as much as we do. What better place to go than one of the many islands in our area and visit their wonderful beaches. Before heading to one of them with your dog, you’ll want to make sure what kind of rules each island has about enjoying the sand and surf with man’s best friend.
While Jekyll Island is a little out of the way from Savannah, the scenic beaches and breathtaking views are worth the trip. As one of the Golden Isles of Georgia, Jekyll Island is a protected barrier island and preserving the island is their top priority.
Dogs are allowed on the beaches of Jekyll all year-round however, they must be on a leash at all times. Just make sure to keep them out of dunes and to pick up after them.
St. Simons Island
The largest protected barrier island in the Golden Isles is St. Simons Island. Even on its busiest days, St. Simons beaches have the most peaceful atmosphere and are a great place to sit back and relax.
Dogs are normally allowed on the beach. However, from Memorial Day through Labor day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., they are prohibited. Any other time, they are free to roam the beaches with or without a leash as long as they are near their owners.
Hilton Head Island
Just across the river in South Carolina is Hilton Head Island. Hilton Head Island is known for its many golf courses, tennis courts, and outdoor activities.
They do have a pet-friendly environment and allow dogs on the beach for most of the year. The friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, dogs are not allowed on the beach from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dogs must be on a leash on the beach after Labor Day through September 30th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Starting in April up until Memorial Day, they must also be on a leash during those hours.
Tybee Island is the most popular island and the closest one to the Savannah area. It’s well known for the movies that have been filmed there and for the attractions such as the lighthouse and the boardwalk as well as the marine center and and the Fort Pulaski National Monument.
Dogs are NOT allowed on the beaches on Tybee Island. However, they are welcome on the trails of Fort Pulaski or in several restaurants that are specifically pet friendly. There are also two dog parks made just for your furry friends to enjoy their time on the island.
